Some customers are complaining about some game changes by Turbo tax in the Deluxe version.
What is happening to the big gig in town?
Have you tried other competitor products? For those who wants to switch, which one is the better alternative. I mean giving bangs for the bucks.
I have been using TurboTax since 1996 (almost 20 years), and so I got used to their interface and functionality.
Which one offers the most similar experience?
I tried "TaxAct" one year and it was so hard to use, I gave up and bought TT again.
Let me join the chorus of long-time customers who are absolutely furious with Intuit for downgrading the capabilities of TurboTax Deluxe so that it can no longer do what it has done for many years - including Schedules D and C.
The product instead informs me that I require Home & Business (which I never needed before) and I must pay another $40.
Look. If you want to change product features, Intuit, that is your right. But to give a lesser product the exact same name as a previous, more capable product is just Evil. This is just clueless about the concept of serving your customers.
If an airline rebranded their economy/coach seats as "Business Class", do you think people would complain if they bought what they thought was a larger, business class seat and found themselves in coach - and not even economy plus?
If you ordered a pick-up truck and discovered that there was no truck bed because the manufacturer now considered that as non-standard equipment, would that feel right?
Don't call this product "Deluxe" any longer. It is "Simple".
The "Deluxe" brand has meant a particular set of features for more years than I can remember.
Any other branded product includes MORE features as years go by. I'm trying hard to think of another example of a product that, under the exact same name, has FEWER features.
TT Deluxe 2014 uses the exact same graphics/interface ... including the photos of the same people who never seem to age. As far as can be seen, the only software development effort has been to cripple the product.
I encourage everyone to seek out products from other manufacturers rather than reward Intuit for their deceitful and greedy behavior. At this point, others have reported satisfactory results with H&R Block software which will import TT data.
It has always been the market dominant and a very fine product, until 2014.
I purchased TT Deluxe w. State Return at Staples 11/26 so I could begin my year end tax planning. The cost was listed at $89.95 less a $30 Staples instant rebate, so final price was fine.
I read the different version features and figured the Deluxe version still was my most reasonable choice, since my situation hadn't changed from previous years.
The program installed without any problem.
So I began entering estimated information.
Surrprise!
When I tried to enter some estate trust income in the K1 form, a script type message appeared that stated Deluxe had been changed and I needed to pay $30 upgrade fee for Premier version!
First thought, I've been hacked or this is a phishing scam.
So I called TT support and the associate listened to my plea and outrage, and was told I had to pay the fee or the program would not accept the K1 info. and print a filing return.
I demanded to speak whith a manager or someone who could explain WTF is going on.
I was told to hold, and moments later she returned to inform she could provide me the Premier download at no charge this one time only.
OK, that seemed a fair recovery.
The associate clearly was aware of the problems that Intuit had created with the changes.
So, I cleared out the Deluxe version, rebooted, and downloaded the Premier.
It opened no problem, yet.
I reentered the information and when I tried to use the State forms, it would not work.
When I tried to use state return it went online to update the software anand the program went into a circular retry ( do loop) to update the software, etc, etc. I called support again and they told me to reinstall after deleting the program and rebooting again. And they gave me a case number. It was 5pm, 11/26, start the holiday. The retry didn't work. So today, 11/28 I called and they are on holiday until December. That's where it stands.
I should have read the Amazon reviews before buying. I hadn't considred H&R Block or other alternatives over TT, given my long standing satisfaction. However, Intuit's decision to alter its marketing strategy to maximize revenues, which it has every right to do, have disappointed this long term customer, and it seems many others. Perhaps time has finally come to try something else.
I have used TT for 20 years at least and I can honestly say I will be switching to anything other than TT.
Why?
Well for years I have used the Deluxe version which has always included the Schedule D and Schedule C. This year the Deluxe version does NOT include the Schedule D and only includes the Schedule C-EZ.
If you want the same functionality this year as in the past you need to by the Premier version which is $30.00 more.
Intuit will soon discover their ploy to increase revenue through this backhanded effort will only increase revenues for H&R Block and other software venders as people leave this expensive product behind.
If you are a longtime user, or even if you are new to the tax software arena, don't buy this product until Intuit reconsiders it's actions.
If I could I would give this zero stars.
This is another example of Intuit trying to mug it's customer base (Quicken loss of functionality comes to mind as well).
UPDATE: I purchased H&R Block Deluxe version with e-file and state for $39.95 (less then TT) and it includes both Schedule C and D. If I stayed with TT it would have cost at least $70 to get the same functionality.
I have always been very satisfied with prior versions of TT Deluxe.
After reading the reviews for the 2014 version (no schedule C,D & E support via efile), I purchased and installed H&R Block Deluxe.
The H&R program seamlessly imported my 2013 TT Deluxe file & displayed all of the pertinent information.
My thanks to all who provided detailed reviews of the shortcomings in the 2014 TT Deluxe version. In my opinion, for the TT rep who initially posted responses to negative reviews to suggest that the 2014 Deluxe still provided support for the above mention schedules, was ludicrous.
The solution; manually enter information on the needed schedule, print it out and mail it to the IRS
. I had to do that kind of thing 20 years ago...why would I want to do that again?
Intuit is not the only game in town and they have managed to lose my business going forward.
I've used H&R Block's tax software (formerly called TaxCut) every year since 1995.
Several times when I saw a promotional deal I purchased both H&R Block and TurboTax to compare.
I found that both programs satisfied my needs but H&R Block costs consistently less.
I have been buying the Deluxe version of H&R Block, before purchasing I check to see if my needs are covered by the feature set of Deluxe version.
The main thing I check if the mutual funds sales and cost basis calculations are included (Schedule D) and the form for Foreign Tax Credit from mutual funds is present (Form 1116).
H&R Block Deluxe version includes these forms but to get this functionality in TurboTax you need to buy the Premium version of the software.
✔ INSTALLATION
♦ I had no problems with my install.
However last year I helped a friend resolve an install problem on a Windows 8 PC.
I am including what we did in case this helps someone else.
Normally the automatic install runs a file called "tcauto.exe".
This file in turn calls another program located under "installers" directory which actually does the work.
We were able to by-pass the error by executing the exe program in the installers directory directly "HRBlock_Deluxe+Efile+State_2014_CD.exe" (it is the only file in that directory).
♦ If you encounter issues with display, such as not seeing selection boxes, check your screen resolution.
Both Windows and Mac minimum requirement for the screen resolution is 1024 x 768 pixels or higher.
At a lower resolution H&R Block software will have problem with display such as not properly displaying selection boxes.
Screen resolution can be changed on your control panel by change PC's display settings.
I purchased the H&R Block 2014 Tax Software + State after the price for the equivalent TuboTax climbed to twice the cost of this product.
TurboTax dropped the Form D from their Deluxe package which would have made it necessary for me to buy the TurboTax Premier.
IMO, the H&R Block software responds much faster and is much easier to navigate.
This software appears to be complete, provides Federal e-filing and includes one state software.
If you don't need the state, H&R Block has a separate package without the state for about $10.00 cheaper than this.
So far, I'm much happier with the H&R software
After 15 years with Turbotax Deluxe I bought H&R Block Deluxe for $40 rather than paying about $90 for Turbotax Premier since I have stock sales every year and could no longer use Turbotax Deluxe and file electronically.
The Mac disc loaded fast and it transferred my 2013 Turbotax return data without an error.
It took a while to get used to the H&R Block data entry format but once I understood it my data entry went well. I can highly recommend this program as long as you are wiling to spend some time getting used to it if you have been a Turbotax user for many years as was my case.
Received my HRB2014 Deluxe on CD today, after previously giving TurboTax NoLongerDeluxe2014 the benefit of the doubt (despite the horrendous reviews, stupidly) and discovering that the program refused to install after multiple attempts.
Sent it back to Amazon in disgust and returned to HRBlock which I had used back in the day when it was called TaxCut.
I was a tad apprehensive, because the reason I initially switched to TT was because TaxCut had become buggy and inaccurate.
But hey, redemption is always possible.. yes? ;-)
Definitely yes, with this product.
It installed properly, was able to easily import my last year's TTax return (I keep all mine on a separate USB drive, never on my computer itself) and I was able to bring it up to date with this year's information in less than 10 minutes.
Easy to navigate and quite user-friendly, IMHO.
I appreciated the fact that it only asked me once (early on) whether I would like to upgrade to Premium; once I had clicked "No Thanks", the program did not bother me about it again -- unlike TTax which has a habit of repeatedly asking.
As a result, I'm very happy that I "came back home" to the H&R Block product.
I have a feeling that there are going to be many former TTax Deluxe users who will feel the same way!

I tried HR Block Deluxe plus state after reading about the TT changes.
The disk installed quickly on Windows 7.
I had no problems importing my 2013 TT return.
It handled my Schedule C and D easily.
It seemed more streamlined than TT and the results basically matched the estimates I had got using TT 2013 with my 2014 inputs.
My state forms are not available until January.
Happy I switched and saved money.
I purchased H&R Block Deluxe 2014 with State and Federal E-File after hearing of the latest Intuit debacle with TurboTax 2014 Deluxe.
I was a bit apprehensive after having used TurboTax for 20+ years, but I have to say that I'm very pleased with the H&R Block product.
First, the cost was half of what TurboTax Deluxe costs this year.
Second, the H&R Block product is complete with all the forms and support you expect from the middle-of-the-road version of a tax preparation program.
I need more than the basics, but not the business-class product.
This product covers my needs, whereas the TurboTax Deluxe product doesn't.
I was able to install the H&R Block software with no problems on my laptop running Windows 7.
After entering the activation code, the program found my 2013 TurboTax return and with one click, imported all of my data without any problems.
So far, I've only gone through the personal information section, but I can say it is every bit as simple as TurboTax.
If you are as confused and disappointed with Intuit as I am, don't hesitate to make the switch to H&R Block.
I'm certainly glad I did.
Have used Turbo Tax Deluxe for years, but this year Intuit decided to omit several forms in the Deluxe version and now charge an extra $30.00 just because these forms are now part of Turbo Tax Home & Business.
So much for customer appreciation and repeat users.
The program itself is good and installs easily.
Transfers are easy too.
Be careful however when installing because the program asks where you want to store your tax document--My Documents or Encrypted.
I first choose to store in My Documents--that received a pop-up stating this was risky and was I sure I wanted to do this.
I decided perhaps the files should be encrypted and filled out the necessary information to create an account on Intuit's web site.
Account created.
Then I saw the light so to speak.
Next year I will have to buy Turbo Tax again if I want to transfer my tax data.
I haven't found a way to save this year's return both on my computer and Intuit's Web site.
Uninstalling the program and reinstalling it still forces one to use Intuit's site.
The option to store in My Documents doesn't exist once you create an on line account to store your return.
Yes, this was my fault for creating an on line account, but there is an element of again taking advantage of the customer on the part of Intuit.
Love the program but very annoyed that what was once Deluxe is now packaged as Premier Home & Business for an extra $30.
Way to stick it to your loyal users, TurboTax.
I have used Intuit for years (Actually since 2006) and I always trust TurboTax for my personal tax needs.
Honestly speaking there were issues here and there over the years but generally issues do get fixed by the time of filing the taxes in form of program and form updates from TurboTax and every year I have been overall happy with the product & features.
Intuit made some serious changes to the software for Tax year 2014 which forces one to buy either TurboTax Premier or this product TurboTax Home & Business 2014 if you have 'stock' or 'mutual fund' and several other tax activity to be reported on your taxes.
All the previous years TurboTax Deluxe 2014 software has been quietly allowing users to get the job done with mere 'Deluxe' version thereby saving people some money.
But for the year 2014 taxes *THIS IS NOT POSSIBLE* with TurboTax Deluxe.
This has indeed outraged several users.
If you are a loyal TurboTax customer, would like to do your taxes on your own
(Like I have been for several years)
and would like to 'e-file' with all the schedules (Schedule D (and associated forms 8949, 1099-B), C, K1 etc; etc;
and are unsure about your taxes situation this year
you can play it safe and get this version reviewed here since this is the 'ultimate version' which is not crippled in any fashion and will definitely allow you get your taxes done correctly without having to involve any third party entities for your tax needs.
Be very sure what version you buy.
Check on Turbo Tax website for forms included.
I had to buy the Home and Business version to get the schedules and forms I needed.
Last year the Deluxe version was all I needed.
Turbo Tax has irritated a lot of long time
customers over this.
The only issue I have is that now this year, I have to buy the most expensive version they sell.
Intuit has repacked their versions and are pushing everyone to the most expensive package they have.
If you have a simple return, you could probably use a free version of Tax Act--but if you have investments or rental property or do some work as a Schedule C employee, they corner you into the most expensive version.
Unfortunately there are no other alternatives--I bought H&R Block first and contrary to what they market about being able to upload Turbo Tax files, they do not.
Only parts of the information imports leaving much data entry.
So research what you need to do, and do as I did, call the information line as the on-line explanations do not cover all you need to know.
But the software works and prior years upload without issue.
In the past multiple years I've always been able to do my taxes with the Deluxe Version.
Since looking over the comments, reviews and the Turbo Tax Website I found that they made some major changes to this years versions.
Since none of the information I found had exact clarification, and many of peoples comments differed from each other on the same version, I opted to go all the way up to the Home & Business version to be safe.
I've been a loyal TurboTax Deluxe customer for over 10 years.
Now, because I have some business and investment income, I have to spend an extra $40 for the TurboTax Personal and Small Business version.
Forget it. I'm buying H&R Blocks software and I will never return to TurboTax.
Reduced functionality required upgrading versions.
Intuit has once again tried to squeeze all they can out of their product users.
Over the past few years, I have had nothing but problems with Intuit customer service regarding TurboTax and QuickBooks.
I REALLY with they had a serious competitor for accounting and payroll.
